Renovation in El Born

2020-2021 Barcelona, Spain

82 m²

Facing a flat with a rigid structure, the project was developed to maximise the space and highlight the constructive elements of the 19th century estate. By knocking down walls and redistributing the space, two distinct areas were created: the day area, which integrates the kitchen, dining room and living room into a single open space, and the night area, with two double bedrooms and a shared bathroom.

Eliminating the distribution spaces, two sliding doors separate the day and night areas, accessing the bedrooms from the living room. These doors, integrated into the wall of the living room, symbolise the duality between old and new, with part of the wall showing the original brickwork and the other part smooth and modern, reinforced by the symmetry of the doors.

A single colour, white, unifies and highlights this duality, covering wooden beams and brick walls along with the new elements. White acts as a vehicle that connects the old with the modern and the textured with the smooth. To give character to the monochromatic space, the kitchen takes centre stage with a striking navy blue colour. Warmth is achieved through the use of natural woods in the bathroom furniture and the parquet flooring that runs the length of the floor.

The lighting is adapted to each space, defining the personality of each area. Given that the flat is intended to be rented, priority was given to logic and comfort, as well as versatility to adapt to different tenants. The style sought is neutral but with character, to attract a wide public without falling into monotony.
